The Moro case and the First Republic
"That car pierced with gunshots, those newspapers scattered on the back seat, that body covered by a sheet, that trickle of blood crossing the asphalt of Via Fani. Images, etched in our memory, that mark an epochal passage."
When and why did the First Republic end? To answer this question, Walter Veltroni reconstructs an entire, troubled chapter of our history beginning with the kidnapping and killing of Aldo Moro, which put an end to the most ambitious political design of the post-World War II period, an alliance between Zaccagnini's DC and Berlinguer's PCI, and opened a crisis that may never have ended. Through the years of terrorism and tension strategy, bombings and secret services, electoral challenges and failed reforms; from Andreotti to Craxi, from Leone to Cossiga, from the risk of a coup to the discovery of the secret organization Gladio, from P2 to Tangentopoli and beyond.
The author rewinds the thread of national memory through events and memories experienced by himself and by the protagonists of the time: he thus weaves together the testimonies of Virginio Rognoni, Claudio Martelli, Emma Bonino, Beppe Pisanu, Claudio Signorile, Rino Formica, Aldo Tortorella, Achille Occhetto, and Mario Segni, but also finds a revealing interview with the brigatist Prospero Gallinari, jailer of the assassinated Christian Democrat statesman.
An investigation into our past that illustrates facts, characters, unpublished versions and political interpretations bringing to light the legacy of a broken design that still hangs over Italy today.
