Nothing but the Truth

Maurizio Avola is not as famous as Tommaso Buscetta and not as much of a leader as Totò Riina. But he is not just any killer: he is the perfect killer, obedient, precise, silent, and for that very reason indispensable at decisive moments. Perhaps underestimated by his bosses and the investigators who sifted his testimony, he has filed in his memory details, voices, and faces spanning three decades of Italian history. Igniting Santoro's interest is the fact that Avola met Matteo Messina Denaro and carried out several actions with "the last godfather." He will discover, however, that this is only a part, and not the most relevant part, of what Avola can unveil, going into what is probably the most important investigation of his life. Delving into the labyrinth of memories, the journalist will gradually transform himself from a reticent interlocutor into a sodal to whom Avola entrusts the puzzle pieces and the shocking revelations that emerge. Mafia and anti-Mafia, politics and power, information and deception, personal stories and social drifts are interwoven in a tale that moves between past and present, from the Sicily of the 1970s to the country we have become.
