The Witness
It seems like any other evening for 17-year-old Darnella Frazier, who is accompanying her young cousin to the supermarket, when something completely changes her life: suddenly she sees a man lying on the ground, a man with skin as black as her own, and a white policeman paralysing him by holding one knee on his shoulders and one on his neck. The immobilised man, who Darnella discovers is called George Floyd, says he cannot breathe, begs for mercy, despairs. Finally he stops living. Darnella filmed the whole thing with her smartphone and does not hesitate to put the video that testifies to the brutality of that senseless murder online. Thus begins a nightmare for her, as she will be threatened and forced to move, but at the same time an epochal turning point will take place in which, thanks to her courage, those who fight against racism will see their voices amplified, and will be able to take another decisive step towards equality. A fiction book for boys and girls aged 12 and up interested in the themes of justice, civil rights and the fight against racism. Reading age: 12 and up.
