The Bravery Olympics
Mexico City, 16 October 1968: on the victory podium of the two hundred metre flat race two dark-skinned men stand with bowed heads raising a fist covered by a black glove, while the third, blond and fair-skinned, looks straight ahead. In ‘The Olympics of Courage’, Paola Capriolo tells the story behind this image, one of the most famous in the history not only of sport in the 20th century. The story of John Carlos and Tommie Smith, who grew up in an America still dominated by racism, and that of Peter Norman, a white Australian who firmly believed in the equality of all human beings. The gesture of silent protest made together on the Olympic podium, for which they will have to pay a heavy price, makes them three great champions not only of running, but of civil courage.
