Violent Hearts
‘Bad children have a heart: it is the violent heart of their fathers, of their bad teachers.’ Not talking about it is easy. Just close your eyes and stay in your bourgeois, intellectual, respectable ghetto. But there are more youngsters in prisons than necessary, and in their stories are hidden violence, broken families, and dreams quelled by the bitter chalice of indifference. Paolo Crepet personally goes into the field and, by interviewing the boys that life has kept on the sidelines, rediscovers the gesture of listening, the inestimable value of care. Through testimonies collected in rehabilitation communities, on the streets and behind bars, he thus reconstructs moments of confrontation with figures that go beyond stereotypes: a rich gypsy woman, a baby killer from Bari, a young robber and other voices alternate and tell of their extreme scepticism towards a better future and their desperate need to belong. There is ruthlessness and suffering in these stories, but there is above all the desire to unveil the great underground of our present to remind us that behind a burnt life there is always an adult who has stopped fighting.
