In Praise of Ignorance and Error
From childhood, we are told that if you make a mistake, you will get a bad grade; if you make a mistake, you will not get promoted and you will not advance in your career, in some cases you will even lose your job; if you make a mistake, you will lose the respect of others as well as your own. To err is to break the rules; to err is to fail. For ignorance, if possible, the contours are even sharper: ignorance is relegated to marginality. And when we move from the definition of the state (ignorance) to the expression that designates the subject in that state (ignorant), the lexicon acquires the connotation of insult. In reality, error is an inevitable part of the process of learning and growth, and admitting it is a fundamental step in the development of open minds and balanced personalities. Likewise, a compassionate view of our boundless, encyclopedic ignorance is often a prerequisite for not ceasing to marvel and rejoice at the wonders of science, art, and nature.
