The Foolishy Correct
In this book, as in La società signorile di massa Luca Ricolfi invents a new sociological category - the insanely correct - to describe a phenomenon that has exploded in the last decade. Political correctness was born in the 1970s with the aim of promoting social cohesion and respect for weaker individuals. But its metamorphosis into insanely correct, made possible by the extraordinary expansion of communication networks and social media, has ended up having the opposite effect: the new credo not only dramatically restricts our freedom of expression, but also creates deep social rifts that favor the rise of a new elite, self-referential and far removed from the living sentiments of the popular classes. The author conducts this reflection both phenomenologically - collecting and recounting dozens of emblematic cases that show the insanely correct in action - and analytically, revealing the mechanism that generates it and ensures its propagation.
