Interregno

National governments fighting each other over memes, coups live on YouTube, shitposting diplomacy, extremist jihadists trolling on Reddit, cattle being fitted with VR visors to increase milk production, environmental disasters going viral on Instagram and TikTok, "covfefefe..." The era in which we live has become so absurd, so grotesque, so incomprehensible, that it can no longer be real: the only possible explanation is that we have entered a "wrong timeline"-a kind of alternative timeline to the "right" timeline in which things go as they should. And instead, the wrong timeline is precisely the reality in which we are immersed: no hallucinations, no bad dreams from which we will one day finally wake up. In this simultaneously surreal and terrifying essay, born out of the cult project Iconographies of the 21st Century, Mattia Salvia ranges between geopolitics and internet studies, philosophy of aesthetics and international news, to give us back a portrait of a world now out of its senses, in which even the worst global crises are buried by a sinister LOL.
