For some time now, there has been more than just the Sicilian Mafia, the Camorra and the 'ndrangheta in Italy. There is a fourth mafia, which today is the least told and least known. Yet it is powerful and the most ferocious. In the lands stretching from the Gargano to San Severo, from Manfredonia to Cerignola, the families of the Foggia Society and the Montanari of the Promontorio rule. Their tentacles have now extended into a huge international business. Their violence is archaic and bestial. Their men sign their murders by shooting them in the face, because to disfigure features is to erase memory as well. Since the 1970s there have been 360 murders, 80 percent of which remain unsolved. Between 2017 and 2018 in the province of Foggia alone there was an average of one murder a week, one robbery a day, one extortion every forty-eight hours. A slaughter that has claimed dozens of lives and has its inexhaustible engine in the bloody decades-long feud between two families: the Romitos and the Li Bergolis.
