It is a scorching summer. Lieutenant Giorgio Chiti-an introverted man haunted by an overwhelming sense of anguish-spends his sleepless nights hunting a serial rapist who haunts the city and law enforcement. Giorgio is also the name of a model law student, a son of Bari's middle class, set on an orderly and ordinary destiny. One evening, however, he crosses paths with Francesco, a peer with an unsavory reputation, a cheat at the gambling tables, a charming and dangerous manipulator. From that moment his life changes forever. At the heart of this unforgettable coming-of-age novel-a painful and violent story about friendship and betrayal-is the tale of the everyday evil that dwells in Francesco's dark soul, but also the dizzying narrative of the fascination that that evil exerts on Giorgio and his unwitting desire for freedom from the constraints of a mundane life.
